For Children’s Day weekend why not let the inner child in you out when you decide where you want to go – cause with this many shows you gotta feel like a kid in a candy shop. Also, for a closer view at Chui Wan and Residence A, two bands I’ve interview this week – click here and here. Let’s get right into the weekend lineup!
FRIDAY
Lots of celebrations tonight – Pangbianr turns two this year and there celebrating this year at none other than XP – Mr. Ray, Yan Yulong will be playing their brand of experimental music as well as a mystery guest – don’t you just love surprises? The uber-badass owner of the Old What? Bar, Sister Qin, is going away for sometime – celebrate her departure with this slew of rockers including Perpetual Motion Machine, Trouble Trouble, Discord, Syringe, and more (plus its free!). To celebrate Children’s Day, Yugong Yishan is hosting some of the most fun bands in town including DH & The Chinese Hellcats, Residence A, Candy Monster, DUDE, and Island Mood (check out my interview with Residence A here). In terms of fun, Dos Kolegas is putting on quite the bill as well – Mademoiselle et son Orchestre, Rolling Bowling, Dama Lama, and the ONE Band. HitWeek China is still going on at Tango with Italian indie group La Dame di Camilla along with hard rockers Negrita and China\’s own southerm-folk rockers Shanren. At Mao Livehouse, have a two-night stand with indie wunderkids Perdel – tonight catch their plugged show – expect lots of mania there. Nearby at Temple, everyone’s favorite stoner rockers Devils at the Crossroads play, where at the Hot Cat Club, the Bedstars, Dead Johnny\’s Pistols, Dr. Liu & The Human Centipede, and Rolling Bowling get down and dirty to celebrate Dee Dee Ramone. Wang Wei and francophone funkers VHR will perform at Jianghu Bar, and a group of lovely ladies will be hosting the folk night at Blue Stream Bar including Platanus and Miss Kiva. Lastly, see wha the kids are raving about at 13 Club – where Jiahuizhen, Dream Spirit, Summer Tribe, and Abominati play.
SATURDAY
Snapline, are emerging from the shadows once again to release their new album “Phenomena” – keep them before they set off on their summer tour – support by Chui Wan (check out their interview here) and Fat City. Can Blue Stream Bar contain Residence A’s manic energy – you’ll just have to see for yourselves as they play alongside Mr. Freeman. If you didn’t get a chance to give your locket of hair to Perdel last night – don’t worry – catch their unplugged show tonight at Mao Livehouse. Close by, Buyi continue to wipe the floor clean at Jianghu Bar. Mongolian indie folksters Ajinai play at the cosy Zajia Bar, while Reloadz and Hugh Reed hold the fort down at Hot Cat Club, and the Red Pirates and Elephant Fresh keep it real at VA Bar. Experimentalists should feel right at home at the Old What? Bar, where Cloud Choir, Wanderlust, and thruoutin play. For something interesting, head to Temple, where 10-piece acoustic pop orchestra the Noise Revival Orchestra from Texas shows us what they got. Lastly, Dos Kolegas is throwing another Reggae Party with Mewenti Sound.
SUNDAY
You can always count on Mao Livehouse to keep it loud on Sunday – tonight they’re bringing Thick as Rock from the US to keep it raw. Isbells, from Belgium kick off their China tour at Yugong Yishan with a little help from Sichuan singer-songwriter Wu Zhuling. Old What? Bar keeps things rolling as well tonight, with Joker, Fables, and Empty Bladder. Lastly, for something on the soft side head to Blue Stream Bar to see French artist Byga or to Jianghu Bar to see the Cedric Hanriot Trio.
