I’m seriously the laziest Halloween goer ever – the motivation is simply MIA. Last minute costumes I guess are my thing – anywhooo – while most of you will be donning costumes this weekend (check the Halloween Shows this weekend and next Wednesday), there are also a slew of great shows going down this week that don’t require you to dress up like a complete buffoon. Here we go…
FRIDAY
WHAI is celebrating one year of being a trio of badass musicians – join them with DJ Zhang over at Dos Kolegas. Over at Temple the Devils at the Crossroads are doin what they do best – rocking out with the devil on their shoulder, they’re joined by Korean heavy metalers Naty. The JZ Festival kicks off at Yugong Yishan tonight – tonight with a Cuban twist as Ochun looks to heat things up. Looking for that bummblegum pop feeling – then get up in Mao Livehouse, where folk pop darlings Po Shang Cun release their debut album. If last week’s electro madness wasn’t enough for you, then get over to XP where dark electronic warlocks Zaliva-D, Noise&Noise;, and Fløøød will hit the decks. Tulegur (formerly Gangzi) will bring his Mongolian folk tunes to Jianghu Bar, perhaps for the last time. Keep it upbeat and rocking over at the Hot Cat Club with Perpetual Motion Machine and Temple. Lastly, catch 16 mins at 69 Café for some hybrid blues rock n roll and some jazz courtesy of Ah-Q Jazz trio at VA Bar.
SATURDAY
Halloween is in full effect tonight as Dos Kolegas turns into a freakshow of fun as SUBS, DH & The Chinese Hellcats, Wu & The Side Effects, Steely Heart, and Candy Monster take you for a spin. The Beatles are undead – or at least that’s what we’re led to believe as The Beijing Beatles turn Temple over to the dark lords. Over at XP, shoegaze darlings Skip Skip Ben Ben may or may not be releasing their long-awaited new album – either case it’ll be a great show with support from Low Bow and Icier. Two on two rap battles in a dark dingy basement by Wangfujing – yeah that sounds pretty fucking awesome – Natural Flavor presents Liquor Swords tonight at Earl Bar – winner takes 1500 cash. The Rolling Stones are getting a hell of a tribute tonight at Mako Livehouse as Los Crashers, Devils at the Crossroads, The Randy Abel Stable, The Power Powder, Pacalolo, and Bedstars play everyones’ favorite hits. Chiren have come out of hiding, catch their original folk tunes over at the Blue Stream Bar. The JZ Festival brings Yellowjackets tonight for some contemporary jazz flavor. Cheers to Mayday over at Mao Livehouse – expect some noise-making bands including Neverland, LHL, and more. Finally, catch the ever lively Ember Swift at Jianghu Bar and sound-based oscillator duo Soviet Pop at 69 Café.
SUNDAY
Pangbianr is bringing Australian solo percussionist and \”amplified junk\” improviser Will Guthrie to XP today to collaborate with local improv heads, including Vavabond. The haunting beautiful Yunggiema will play a special show over at the Blue Stream Bar tonight along with folk singer Song Yuzhe. The JZ Festival comes to a close tonight with Terri Lyne Carrington’s soothing, melodious rhythms. Need metal in your life, well Sundays at Mao Livehouse don’t disappoint – The Lifeless, Nower, The Sweet Escape, IBU, and Four Five rage. Fruity Shop and Mu-Nest are throwing down some quirky offbeat electronica at Zajia Lab with Malaysian flica, Japanese okamotonoriaki, and Italian artist layer, along with our own me:mo. If you have time during the afternoon in the area catch Liu YuSi give an outdoor concert. Finally, catch a free folk session at Jianghu Bar with Lin Feng and friends.
