Nasty Wizard Recording threw down last month to celebrate the release of their Asian Shoegaze Compilation (which if you haven’t snagged already you’re missing out) with a beefed up showcase at Yue Space sporting some of the city’s newest contenders to be reckoned with. Not exactly a shoegaze-fest per say, but enough reverb and wistful soundscapes to keep listeners daydreaming way past their bedtime.
Kicking off the evening were the young noisemakers Wonder Sea, whose post emo rock sound doused in bittersweet adolescence was the perfect entryway to the wide range of sounds in store for the rest of the night. Young as they may be, the band is sounding sharper and sharper.
Speaking of killer debuts – it was Goodbye Honey Boy’s third ever show and gotta say – these three have something going on. Ambient dream pop that’s drips with style and refinement. A head-trip worth taking, I’m expecting we’ll be hearing from these three again on LBM.
The spirit of shoegaze was alive and well in Default, a band that sneaks up on you with their powerhouse psychedelic-infused reverb-soaked melodies. The Kevin Shields haircut is no joke, these lads know what they’re doing. Can’t tell you how excited I am to have this band on the scene.
Well not exactly new comers, Silent Speech are deadlier than ever now – indie rock that swoons one moment and then explodes the next – it’s an emotional journey always with these cats.
SNSOS took the nightshift slot but it didn’t matter cause this band is having a hell of a year. Even with their new lineup the band was in total command of their sound all the while showing hints of exploring new territory. The band is prepped to have a hell of year and their set was just the cheery on top of a splendid showcase from each of the bands.
So yeah —- some new talent out there Beijing! Get on it. And of course pick up your Asian Shoegaze Compilation over at bandcamp (https://nastywizardrecordings.bandcamp.com/album/asian-shoegaze-compilation-vol-1) or one of the other Nasty Wizard events about town.
