Gig Recap: Bohan Phoenix, Howie Lee x Dutch E Germ, Jason Hou, DJ TOY (Omni Space 2017.09.22)

Omni Space is turning into a little haven for electronic and hip-hop fare. Maybe little isn’t the right word – as Omni Space is pretty damn big and boosts one of Beijing’s finest sound systems. Nevertheless, there’s something innately intimate about the space and more so the location – since there’s nothing within spitting distance, all you’ve got is the fine folks who made to trip to Tianqiao. And what a crowd! Haven’t seen an audience get this worked up in some time. Much of that was due to the headliner, rapper Bohan Phoenix, who was born in China before moving to Brooklyn at the age of 11. Since then the rapper has relocated to Chengdu where his family has been living for well over a decade. The artist was in the midst of his JALA Asia Tour, promoting his newest EP, a wondrous mix of Far East sampling and American hip hop, trap stylings, and charismatic swag that in more than one easily crosses cultural boundaries. The rapper was in his element at Omni Space with the help of DJ TOY and his motley crew, relishing the moment and the warm response from fans. If that wasn’t enough we were treated to the latest set from Howie Lee, joined by Dutch E Germ of Gang Gang Dance on drums – there’s something wildly innovative about the way Howie Lee pieces together a track and creates this ‘experience’ of sound and visual that’s often times pretty bonkers. Dude’s operating on a different level. Shout out to Jason Hou, who had the task of warming up the early crowd, though I sadly missed use his globe. Here’s to hoping Omni Space can keep up the hot streak.
