A sign that you’re connecting with your audience – when the huge gap between them and the stage, which particularly at a Yue Space is frequently (and awkwardly) dormant, is suddenly engulfed by wide-eyes patrons as soon as you set foot on stage. That’s where Nocturnes are at. The indietronic duo has made leaps and bounds since their small beginnings, and more importantly have struck a chord with the young Chinese. And for good reason – they craft highly digestible, delicately produced songs that burst with emotional vulnerability and steely coolness – a highly combustible combination. The band celebrated their full length debut release and the start of their first China tour and for the occasion, they invited two of the scene’s finest – jangly instrumental rock quartet SNSOS, and glistening showcase outfit Last Goodbye, two bands who I believe are ready for the road too. Plus, an intimate electronic set from Anxt who wisely brought his gear to the dance floor (more of this please Yue Space) and kept the stragglers loose. Congrats on the release Nocturnes – and if you happen to be reading this outside of Beijing check them out on their tour. I hear they’ve got some stellar supporting acts.
