Stemming from the tattered remains of their second (yet-to-be-released) full-length album – the latest from Riot in School is essentially a preemptive B-side album. Entitled ‘Those time we wasted on each other’, the four-track release finds the Chengdu alt rock band – known for their grungy gaze-filled noise rock – in fine form, burning brightly as they skip along the edge of their predecessors, savoring the fuzz and buzz of their sound, and tapping into something more elemental as they process the world around them. It’s a riot, one that has us eagerly awaiting their follow-up.

CeZhi 册纸 – I Walked Down a Weird Street 我走过一条奇怪的街

Shedding much of the gonzo elements of their past work, as well as the ’toilet厕’ from their name, CeZhi, out of Guangzhou, approach their latest ‘I Walked Down a Weird Street’ with gritty yet vivacious evocation – giving anthropomorphic life to the streets that form the bedrock of their city. Told in an almost novelistic poise, there’s steady propulsion to how the band immerses you into its world, its melodic drive closer to the storytelling bent of acts like Lou Reed and like-minded art punks. They may have lost the bombast, but the new CeZhi finds ways to make their genre-twisting sound ring deeper than ever.

Cheese Rolling 滚奶酪 – 下沉世界的最后狂欢

Guitar rock infused with a Britpop charisma, blues rock scrappiness, and a new wave sincerity, Cheese Rolling doesn’t beat around the bush on their debut EP, making the kind of old school rock n’ roll that feels like a time capsule to a different era. With guitar solos aplenty and cheeky references to the Beatles and a song that feels like a spiritual ode to Oasis, it threatens to veer into, dare I say, cheesy territory, but there’s an earnestness to the band’s embrace of their tropes that’s easy to get swept up in. 

“滚奶酪”在首张 EP 中并不拐弯抹角，他们向吉他摇滚中注入了英伦流行的魅力、蓝调摇滚的狂乱与新浪潮的真诚，创作的老派摇滚乐仿佛一个时间胶囊，将人们带入了不同的年代。大量的吉他独奏，对“披头士”毫不在意的引用，感觉像是“绿洲”精神颂歌的乐曲，我敢说这些都可能会误入俗套，但乐队对自己风格的认真态度却很容易让人进入醉其中。

Stick Xiaoming Again And Again 反复攻击小明 – Stick Xiaoming Again And Again 反复攻击小明

One of the punk scene’s beacon of lights – Stick Xiaoming Again And Again 反复攻击小明 from Hangzhou return with latest self-titled LP – which they consider themselves their first ‘studio’ album. An amalgamation of the band’s various modes and temperaments – hardcore, punk, and folk – it feels in many ways like a scrapbook tracing the band’s past to the present. There’s an authenticity to the band’s barbed critiques – whether it’s a heartfelt eulogy for punk music or a commentary on mankind’s inability to evolve – that cuts deep. Extra point for bringing in American drummer Urian Hackney (of Iggy Pop, The Armed, and Rough Francis) and Jajatao frontman Liu Yucao to produce. True blue punk. 

朋克场景中的明灯——杭州的“反复攻击小明”携同名专辑回归——也是他们自认为的第一张“录音室”专辑。融合了乐队的各样风格与模式：硬核、朋克、民谣，感觉像是他们过去到现在的一本剪贴簿。不论是对朋克乐发自内心的赞颂还是对人类无法进化的批判，乐队的批评都有种真实性。另外值得一提的是，乐队请到了美国鼓手 Urian Hackney（Iggy Pop、The Armed和 Rough Francis 的鼓手）参与了鼓的部分的录制和假假條主唱刘与操担任制作。真正的蓝调朋克。

Demonslaught 666 – Endless Witchcraft

One of the metal scene’s thrashiest, gnarliest and most invigorating acts out there – Demonslaught 666 – based in Zhengzhou – lay it all down on their new LP Endless Witchcraft, released with Beijing label Awakening Records and Vicious Witch Records in the UK. Blackened speed metal that evokes everyone from Hellripper to Sodom, their sound comes charging at you like a freight train, with hooks that grip you, demonic vocals that shake you, and a production that’s crisp and lean (mixing and mastering courtesy of renowned German audio engineer Marco Brinkmann). Glorious.

Broken Shaft 断轴 – Still Alive

Picking up stakes and moving from Lanzhou to Guangzhou – hardcore outfit Broken Shaft has gone through quite the geographical shift – one that saw them become a part of GZHC, and eventually make speedway on their latest LP, aptly named Still Alive. Pure unfiltered hardcore punk, it’s a riotous rallying call against ‘bad behavior’ in all shapes and forms – from moral kidnapping to emotional blackmail – and anything that infringes on one‘s interests. Crisp production, potent in-your-face vocals, pummeling drums, and metal-laced guitar riffs – you know the drill. 

从兰州搬到广州并吸收了新成员，硬核乐队“断轴”经历了相当大的地理变迁，在这过程中他们成为了 GZHC 的一员，并最终在他们的最新发行中实现了高速发展，专辑被巧妙地命名为 Still Alive。未经修饰的纯粹硬核朋克，是对反对各种形式和形态的“不良行为”的暴乱号召，从道德绑架到情感勒索，再到任何侵犯个人利益的行为。清脆的制作、直指人心的人声、猛烈的鼓点、金属味十足的吉他旋律——你知道的，这些杀器。

Tartars – Scenes in Colors

Shoegaze that’s busting at the seams with evocative potency and rich details, Ningbo’s Tartars make a grand entrance on their sensational debut Scenes in Colors. Using colors as a gateway to the synesthetic experiences that shape our lives early on, Tartars are very much in the schoolhouse of lo-fi dream pop that’s dense in its sonic textures – giving its muddier, more turbulent walls of sound a more visceral adolescent veneer – and allowing its melodic noise pop undercurrent sweep you away. It hooks you from start to finish.

Anchored by a pair of musicians working at the top of their game – producer/bassist/singer HAO and keyboardist/singer D娃 – Lost Soul Paradise’s debut Urban Kinkakuji Temple looks to capture that acute feeling of loneliness in a bustling city. The Beijing trip hop act out uses the road paved out by acts such as Massive Attack and throws in a wealth of influences – from dream pop, new wave, city pop, and progressive house – to craft an album that feels both retro and contemporary – never letting its pop sensibilities sour the final product.

The Upside Down 完美倒立 – Bubble Night 夜色碳酸

Chongqing’s The Upside Down continue their descent into disco-laced urban pop on their latest LP – Bubble Night – all but abandoning their more guitar-heavy dream pop roots. It’s a neon-smear synthpop affair, one that aims to capture the magnitude of emotions that a single night (or bubble) can contain, and while its soft touch doesn’t always work to their benefit, it certainly helps it go down smooth akin to a glass of crisp bubbly.

Tengguang Agency 腾光事务所 – D.L.C

Tengguang Agency is the latest outfit to inject math rock theatrics and emo rock sensibilities into the bedrock of instrumental rock. The young Suzhou band, which features former members of spry emo rock outfit autumngo秋日疾走, hits that adolescent sweet spot – equal parts vulnerable and nimble – giving their EP entitled D.L.C – a clear-eyed intensity that will surely stir up some emotions. It may not reach the high-wire heights of its predecessors, but it’s a heck of a debut and one that has me eagerly awaiting what comes next. 

“腾光事务所”是最新一支在器乐摇滚上加入数摇桥段和情绪摇滚情感的组合。这支年轻的苏州乐队中有情绪摇滚乐队“秋日疾走”的前成员，在他们的 EP D.L. C 里击中青春期脆弱与灵动间的甜蜜点，这张发行清澈又强烈，定会激起一些情绪。它可能没能达到先前类似乐队的高度，但这只是他们的第一张发行，并我对接下来的作品充满了期待。

Yunjing 云镜 – 行驶在桥的中间

Indie grunge act Yunjing haven’t missed a step on their new EP, Driving in the Middle of the Bridge, which finds the Fujian outfit not so much softening the edges of their sound but expanding them outwards into something more fluid and more resonant – it’s sardonic lyricism overlapping with its vulnerabilities almost seamlessly. As always there’s an old school magnetism to their sound – one that’s not afraid to lean into the sleaze and sexiness of the grunge era, even injecting a rush of post punk drive to their sound before walls of noise overwhelm.

Young Wuhu band Opposite makes their mark on their impressive debut ‘Pillow for Being Alone’. Traversing across post punk, noise pop and shoegaze – there’s something achingly romantic and unapologetic about their sound – with an almost Faye Wong-esque pop sensibility that feels timeless. It’s not afraid to allow the distortion to spill out into the ether or let its emotions get the better of them – a sweet and sour juxtaposition and a perfect encapsulation of the turbulent world its performers live and breathe in. Tight no-nonsense propulsive dream pop euphoria and a hell of an introduction. 

年轻的芜湖乐队“相反”在他们令人印象深刻的首张专辑《孤独的枕头》中初露头角。横跨后朋克、噪音流行和盯鞋，他们的声音中有种痛苦的浪漫与绝不后悔——一种类似王菲流行乐的情感，仿佛永恒。他们不怕失真，也不怕情绪失控——酸与甜并存，完美概括了演奏者生活的晃荡世界。严谨而不失推进力的梦泡乐令人愉悦，也是一次出色的自我介绍。

Run Run Run – Five Thunder Heart Palm 五雷轰心掌

Five Thunder Heart PalmBeijing psychedelic rockers Run Run Run find credence in the humid retro sounds of southwest China on their third LP – Five Thunder Heart Palm – released with Spacefruity Records. While not as full of the krautrock-laced twists and turns of their previous records – the band, which has gone through quite the shake-up – taps in something more elemental here – cooking up a zesty dish of electric guitar-drenched melodies, hazy grooves, soulful rhythms, and authentic vintage vibes that adheres closer to the psychedelic funk that’s finding a resurgence across Southeast Asia. And while traces of their love for The Velvet Underground still worms their way to the surface from time to time, this Run Run Run is a very different beast. 

北京迷幻摇滚乐队  Run Run Run 在太空果味发行的第三张全长《五雷轰心掌》中寻觅到了中国西南真实的潮湿复古之音。虽然不像之前的专辑那样充满德式摇滚的蜿蜒，乐队也经历了相当大的调整，但在这张唱片中却融入了更多元素，烹制出了一道充满电吉他旋律、朦胧节奏、深情律动和纯正复古气息的美味佳肴，更贴近东南亚正在复苏的迷幻放克音乐。虽然他们对“地下丝绒”乐队的热爱仍不时流露，但如今的  Run Run Run  已是截然不同的野兽。

Jade Breaking Plan For Liberty 唯利玉碎计划- The Sun-Quenching Chronicle 淬日纪事

Chengdu’s Jade Breaking Plan for Liberty go for broke on their sophomore LP – The Sun-Quenching Chronicle – a sprawling carnivalesque swirl of grunge, metal, core, jazz, prog and blues rock that dedicates itself to the ‘shadows, sacrifices, and dust in the era of madness’. Crafted together with manic literary glee and anarchic irrelevant – it’s guitar rock that happily goes off the deep end – injecting a restless spirit of experimentation and fusion that threatens to collapse in on itself every track. And while there are times when there are simply too many spinning plates, it’s all tied together with a palpable anger that pairs well with its hefty and whiplash induing instrumentation. 

成都的“唯利玉碎计划”在他们的第二张全长《淬日纪事》中不可阻挡，这是融合了垃圾摇滚、金属、核、爵士、前进摇滚和蓝调摇滚而成的狂欢漩涡。献给“癫狂时代里的影子、狂人、祭品和灰尘”。吉他摇滚交织着狂躁的文学之乐与无政府主义，欢快地迈向深渊。注入实验与融合的不安精神，每首曲子都在崩坏的边缘。虽然有时候使用的元素太多了，但这一切都与一种明显的愤怒联系在一起，而这种愤怒与它厚重的、鞭笞的器乐很好地相互结合。

HTYZ黑甜一枕 – Stand Still 按兵不动

Emerging Hangzhou post punk trio Heitian Yizhen, formed ‘amid a wave of technological anxiety and technical embarrassment’ joins the ranks of other post punk acts across China – leaning into the fatalistic undertones of the genre with relish on their debut EP ‘Stand Still’. Slick, melodic cold wave-inflicted tunes whose methodical precision, particularly in singer Zhao Yiyang’s smoldering voice, only adds to the band’s aura, it’s a promising entry-point into the young band, though one hopes they’ll take more chances in the future. 

杭州新兴三人组“黑甜一枕”，这支“在技术焦虑与技能局促不安的浪潮中”组建的团体加入国内其他后朋乐队的行列——对这一流派宿命论色彩的喜爱流淌在首张 EP《按兵不动》中。旋律流畅，充满精确的冷潮曲调，主唱赵一样酝酿爆发的人声更增添了乐队气场。这是进入这支年轻乐队的一个有力的切入点，但希望他们今后能把握更多机会。
