The Fallacy 疯医 – See You On The Other Side Of Darkness 愿我们在黑暗的另一边相见

Xinxiang post punk band The Fallacy find comfort and maturity in the swirl and saw-toothed edges of the genre with their fourth LP, See You On The Other Side Of Darkness, out on Modern Sky. Their strongest work in some time, the band returns to their native language and introduces experimental free jazz saxophonist Li Zenghui into the mix – pulling back on the refined synthesizer sounds of their earlier work and instead, leaning into their lean, mean and, at times, dissonant musicality. It all matches up terrifically with their potent lyricism which is both emotive and desperate, finding room for both slow-burning ballads and exasperated breakdowns. By no means a knockout, but The Fallacy’s latest shows the band leveling up and forging new ground.

C.S.B.Q – 未来的宝藏

The flame of punk shines bright with Changsha’s C.S.B.Q, whose tight, energetic, compassionate, and stirring punk rock feels more timely than ever. Evoking the folk-tinged proletarian songs of China’s past with a contemporary punk twist, the band’s music acts as both a rallying call and a hell of a good time – wrapping its warmly tender sax-soaked melodies with a riotous and deviant punk shell inherited from their musical ancestors. Yet its heart is with the rising youth of today, and with an acute ability to connect and put themselves on the same stage as their listeners, they’re able to imbue their songs with a timeless working-class quality – one that burns with a desire for a better world – fearless in its pursuit and magnanimous in its hope.

Guitar shaman and sound artist Li Jianhong unleashes his latest psychedelic-evoking, feedback-soaked noise release – his third based around the theme of his hometown, Lijia and the Siming Mountains, which inspired the exploratory and mystic sounds found within. In some ways, a dialogue between the terrain of his childhood and the spirits and monsters that resided from within ’the mysteries and legends’ of the mountain fog, the fifty-minute long piece (broken into two parts) is a trip that shakes you loose and one that rouses both awe and wonder. Simply put, the Beijing based artist is at the top of his game.

Chimera Cult – Join The Cult

Formed out of the charred ashes of former Shanghai bands Hitobashira, Alpaca, and Hydraslug, Chimera Cult grabs holds of the metal baton and charges full speed ahead on their debut release Join The Cult. An onslaught of heavy riffs, melodic breakdowns, and guttural hardcore vocals it’s a musically lean ensemble – a scorching boiling over cauldron of punk, hardcore, prog metal, groove metal, death metal, black metal, and ‘good ol’ fashioned cock rock’. It’s a throwback sound that knows how to have a damn good time whilst wreaking havoc.
